It’s the last day of school, and you promise yourself to make this the best summer ever. You can basically taste that salt water from the beach and feel your palms drip sweat as you imagine yourself fist-pumping at all the raves. Reality check- that’s NOT what your summer ends up being. You get guilt tripped into another family trip to the midwest, listening to the same Grouplove album over and over again; truth is, your summers will always be like this until you learn to let your hair grow and say NO!
Let’s rewind. It’s your last day of school, tell your parents to back off, bust out your loudest speakers, and begin jamming out to Let’s Dance by The Ramones. This song will kick in your adrenaline and having you jumping on your bed wearing nothing but undergarments. It’s that simple to kick off a summer that you’ll remember forever.
Don’t stop there, tune into The Frights and their songs Tongues and Submarines. These two will make you want to get out of bed and find that special someone to fulfill your summer needs. The song Tongues is all about any what any young teen cares about, making out, hickies, and how cool your ripped shoes are.
The young punk band FIDLAR know that feeling when you start acting weird around your crush. Oh what’s that word called again, oh yeah- Awkward. Believe it or not, the song Awkward actually is about the fear of making your crush feel awkward. Crazy right? As sung in the song, “I got no job I got no money got no self esteem/ I take a Xanax every morning for anxiety/ And don’t you know I’m really good at making this feel awkward”.
Now, you can rest from all of that tanning at the beach and all those seven dollar concerts. Chill out and listen to My Kind of Woman and Baby’s Wearing Blue Jeans by Mac Demarco. Demarco’s jangling electric guitar and his melodic voice that’s constantly changing pitches, will put you in a trance only a true Canadian can do.
Kick that hype up again with your favorite, Fever by The Black Keys and, Young Folks by Peter Bjorn and John. These two songs will definitely make you want to grow up, but will remind you it’s okay to be young and in love. Like what Peter Bjorn and John sung in Young Folks “If I told you things I did before/ told you how I used to be/ would you go along with someone like me?”
Take notice on Wander by The Aquadolls, I Will Love You and All I Have To Do Is Dream by Summer Twins, Y Do U Call Me? by Colleen Green, and Dreamphone by Peach Kelli Pop. These songs are mushy and will undoubtedly put you in a warm summer daze. Wander begins with a mellow sound, and you begin to imagine skipping through a field of yellow flowers. I Will Love You perfectly cuts in and gives starts making you feel you belong in an indie musical.
Now, I know that we’ve all heard the popular Arctic Monkeys songs like, R U Mine? and Do I Wanna Know? However, the song Baby I’m Yours is off one of their first albums, Leave Before The Lights Come On, and totally worth listening to. It fits perfectly into a summer full of love and charm.
Last but not least, Summer Nights by, John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. As you may already know, this song is from the musical Grease. Some might disagree with this song but, there’s no other way to end a summer playlist without adding the song that created summer love.
All these songs have mainly one thing common, summer (what a surprise!). Summer is a moment for you to actually find yourself without being constantly stressed from homework, projects, or sports. Summer is something that YOU can control. Not your teachers, coaches, nor friends. Soon enough you won’t have Summer, you’ll have just another season of weather and no freedom. Take a chance and listen to these amazing summer love songs.
